The sad truth remains that, despite their contributions, over the years legislation has been signed into law that have placed an undue financial burden on older Americans and people with disabilities.<\/p>\n<p>APWU supports expanding Medicare to \u00a0guarantee \u00a0the \u00a0right \u00a0of \u00a0healthcare \u00a0 for \u00a0 all \u00a0 Americans. \u00a0 Further, \u00a0America&#8217;s \u00a0 seniors \u00a0 should \u00a0 see \u00a0 their \u00a0benefits expanded with fair increases to \u00a0Social Security benefits, Cost of Living Adjustments based on calculations which adequately takes into consideration the spending habits of seniors, and the repeal of predatory provisions which penalize those who paid their fair share into Social Security.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"entity-paragraphs-item two-col-img-txt-btn-sec lightblue-bg\" data-anchor=\"\">\n<div class=\"inner animate fade-in-from-bottom animated\">\n<h4>LEGISLATION TO STRENGTHEN OUR SOCIAL SAFETY NET<\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"inner-sec-wrap\">\n<div class=\"two-col-sec\">\n<div class=\"two-col-sec-desc\">\n<h4>SOCIAL SECURITY EXPANSION ACT<\/h4>\n<p><strong>H.R. 1170, Sponsored by Rep. Peter DeFazio (OR-04)<br \/>\nS. 478, Sponsored by Sen. Bernie Sanders (VT)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lifts the earnings cap on Social Security taxes, subjecting all income over $250,000, which would result in extending the solvency of Social Security.<\/li>\n<li>Low-income earners would see an increase of their<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Social Security benefits by $1,300 a year.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cost-of-Living Adjustments would be calculated by using the Consumer Price Index for the Elderly (CPI-E), which more accurately reflects the spending habits of senior citizens and would yield a fairer cost of living increase than the current way of calculation.<\/li>\n<li>Provides student benefits for those under the age of 22 who are children or survivors of disabled workers if the child is enrolled full-time in college.<\/li>\n<li>Combine the Disability Insurance Trust Fund with the Old Age and Survivors Trust Fund.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"two-col-sec\">\n<div class=\"two-col-sec-desc\">\n<h4>SOCIAL SECURITY FAIRNESS ACT<\/h4>\n<p><strong>H.R. 141, Sponsored by Rep. Rodney Davis (IL-13)<br \/>\nS. 521, Sponsored by Sen.
